Over the last few years I've put lots of what I call "hints" in that topic. For example, on America Online, on the Star Trek boards, under "Writing," there is a topic called "Strange New Worlds and Strange New Writers." This is an open board where anyone can ask us questions about writing in general, and the anthology in particular. John Ordover and I also try to help new writers in other ways.
I am very pleased to have a small hand in helping all the writers in the three volumes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on their path toward selling more and more work. Now everybody go buy their novels later this summer or early fall. Since the rules state "publication" and both their novels will be published after the contest date, they got in just under the wire here. Hoyt and Rebecca Lickiss, will not be returning again, since both have sold fantasy novels to Ace books. In this year's volume, our first-place winners, Sarah A. Jackee C., and Kim Sheard still have a chance of tying Dayton's record next year. Peg Robinson has also sold stories to other markets, but she just might, if we're lucky, be able to slip in under the deadline next year before one gets published. We'll all be watching for your novels and stories. Franklin Thatcher won the grand prize in the Writers of the Future contest to complete his eligibility in both contests. Watch for that first book this summer in the Star Trek: New Earth series. Kathy has sold a number of stories to Analog and has just finished her first novel, cowritten with her husband, Jerry Oltion. I know for a fact that Kathy Oltion and Franklin Thatcher will never be returning to these pages. Wolfe, Peg Robinson, Kathy Oltion, Franklin Thatcher, Jackee C., and Kim Sheard. York in the two-out-of-three exclusive club are Jerry M. She has almost eliminated herself with her other writing sales, both in science fiction and romance, so I'm not sure if she'll be eligible next year to try to tie Dayton's record of three. York had a story that was the very last one cut, due to a few technical details. One other writer came very, very close to joining Dayton this year in that very exclusive club. I think he's going to be one of those writers to enjoy for years to come. And all you readers, watch for his novels and short stories in the future.
Someday I hope to meet Dayton and just shake his hand. Since I have gotten over ten thousand manuscripts total in the three years, you will understand what kind of feat Dayton has pulled off. He is the only writer to make all three volumes of this contest. Dayton Ward, with his story in this volume, will make his last appearance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

They have crossed over into the ranks of professional writers. (I'm a fan of Star Trek and a professional writer, so I could not send in a story.) Because of that limitation, some of the writers you will read in this volume, and have read in previous volumes, will not be able to return. The rules of this contest limit the entrants to being fan writers with less than three published professional stories. And contest number four, with the rules in this volume, will allow still more fans to join us. Over the last three years, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has allowed forty-nine fans just like me (writing fifty-four different stories) to join the ranks of professional writers in the Star Trek universe. And let me tell you, that makes me smile. Now, as an editor, I get the chance each year to let other fans reach the same dream. As a Star Trek fan who went home from high school and college to watch the original three seasons every Friday night (yes, I am that old), it has always seemed to be a dream that I got the chance to write in the Star Trek universe. For three years running I've had the great pleasure of editing these volumes, and every year I've enjoyed it more and more. But the volume you hold in your hand has done just that.
